A. S. Fraser, a New York lawyer, sues officers of Erie Railroad company and the Pennsylvania Coal company, as counsel for 22 Italian laborers, who he says were kidnaped from NY City, locked in a car, sent to the coal strike region and then intimidated because they didn't want to work in the mines.
Fraser says the men thought they were hired to do track work, but went on a train to Dunmore, PA, and were sent to work in a Pennsylvania Coal company breaker.

Romantic marriage of John B. Morgan and Mary Hall, both of Green`s place, by Alderman W. S. Millar yesterday. Morgan, a driver boy in the Lackawanna mines a few months ago, had his legs seriously squeezed between car bumpers. The injured limb was amputated above the knee. During his confinement in the hospital, Mary Hall was a constant visitor. He proposed from his sickbed. Upon discharge the 21 year old took the 20 year old Miss Hall before Clerk of Courts Daniels and applied for the marriage license. [condensed]

Death of Mrs. Mary (Samuel T.) Jones, yesterday, while boarding a street car at Dunmore cemetery. Husband is superintendent of Connell Company's mines. Two of their children, Dr. Thomas Jones, who died two years ago last March, and Mrs. John B. Page, who died a year ago last July, were buried at Dunmore with the plot about 300 feet from the entrance. Age 58 years, 9 mo. born Nantyglo, Monmouthshire, S. Wales, and was formerly Miss Mary Morgan. Her marriage to Mr. Jones occurred in April 1866 at the home of her sister in Pittston. Husband and daughter Edith Jones survive. "Open House" was also the order of the day yesterday at Fireman's hall, and hundreds of firemen and their friends were entertained. Much interest was manifested in the latest addition to trophies, this being a handsome case containing the trumpets of the different companies. There are about thirty of them, their monetary value being thousands of dollars, to say nothing of their intrinsic value. Those who received were F. W. Zizleman, Peter Robling Jr., M. J. Ruane, William Suydam, Joseph W. Hall, and P. F. Yoos.

Age 37, lived on Church street, Archbald. Survived by wife and young daughter Monica. He was a son of Mrs. Richard Caffrey, Hill street, Archbald, brothers Thomas Caffrey and Richard Caffrey, Butte, MT John Caffrey, Archbald; sisters Mrs. John Lally, Red Lodge, MT; Mrs. Matthew Fitzsimmons, Mayfield; Mrs. Joseph Remmet, Olyphant, Annie Caffrey, Winnie Caffrey and Nellie Caffrey, Archbald, survive.

Three generations of one family narrowly escaped drowning in the
Lackawaxen
River near Pompton. William Headley, 8, celebrated New Years
day
by skating on the Lackawaxen when he plunged into an air hole and sank
beneath the ice. His mother, Mrs. Albert Headley, who was
standing
on the river bank was quick to respond to his cries for help.
Casting
aside her shawl to her gray-haired mother, Mrs. Headley leap into the
stream.
She reached the boy none to soon seizing his coat and endeavored to
pull
themselves over the edge of the ice to safety. With every
effort
the ice cracked before she could gain a foothold. She fell
back exhausted.
The third generation then came to her rescue, despite her 50 years,
Mrs.
Greiner rushed in. The surface cracked and she too fell into
the
stream. For five minutes, they battled bravely, shouting for
help.
Henry Starbuck, a neighbor heard the cries, and seized Mrs. Greiner's
hand
while prostrating himself across the ice, until a party of men drew
them
ashore with ropes.

Police notes: A woman from Wilkes-Barre left a young child on the doorstep of the West Side station house yesterday, but was called back by officer John Mallott before she escaped. Mrs. Bridget Joyce, Wilkes-Barre, who lies sick in a hospital, left the child a year ago at St. Patrick's orphan school. The mother wished to see her child recently and so the child was sent. It was brought back by a Wilkes-Barre woman yesterday, but as its breast was covered with a rash, the sisters in charge would not receive it until cured of the suspected disease. Officer Mallott called Dr. W. A. Paine who pronounced the disease a simple rash, and the child was taken back to Wilkes-Barre.

Before Judge Kelly, Lackawanna co., yesterday, the following cases decided:
Nora E. Detweiler, Albert K. Detweiler. Married eight years ago by Rev. Dr. Guild and lived in Green Ridge for six weeks, during which time Detweiler drank considerably. He left her, saying he was going to the Philippines and has not been seen since.
Ira Mitchell secured a divorce on the grounds of incompatibility. They were married April 28, 1888, and lived together until Sept 6, 1902. Mitchell stated they have had trouble for ten or twelve years and in that time he has never roomed with her. They were in the restaurant business and his wife accused him of running around with other women. She neglected her children to follow him about nights, and when he was home, frequently locked him out of the bedroom. Mitchell, a constable, was often called to serve processes at night.
Barbara Erion, Jacob Erion. Jacob Erion was sentenced in Feb. 1899 by Judge Edwards to five years for rape and abusing Jennie Shimer, an 11-year old girl. They were married in Germany, Nov. 5, 1885, and had lived in PA for 16 years, four in this county. Before the Shimer incident, the respondent had deserted his wife several times.
Lena Ross, William Ross. Married Oct. 18, 1900, and lived at 452 Eighth street. From that time until they separated, their life was one continuous round of trouble, and he used vile, obscene language.
Thadeus Mirles, Maggie Mirles, colored. Married in 1873 in Wilkes-Barre. His wife accused him of dealings with other women and they separated for some months but lived together for some time. Owing to his wife's fondness for another man, "Boli" Wallace, they separated for good.
Roland A. Comtenoy, Mary Jane Comtenoy, by mutual agreement. Mary Jane Thomas married Sidney Monk, Scranton, some fifteen or sixteen years ago. Monk went away and, not hearing from him, she supposed him dead and married Comtenoy. It afterwards developed Monk was still alive.
Annie Mundy, Charles Mundy. Married at Pottsville, July 8, 1896, and came to Cedar ave, Scranton four years ago. Mundy's principal fault was in turning his wife and two children out in the snow at 2 o'clock in the morning, although at various times he struck her, and on one occasion used a beer bottle on her.
George H. Traugher, Vira Traugher. Suit brought on adultery, a well known physician was named as correspondent. This case was tried by jury a short time ago and a verdict for the libelant returned.

Death of John Shaffer, 65, Fairview, Sunday. He was born in the house in which he died in February 1837. Mrs. James Dougherty, widow, was buried Monday, with services at the Catholic church and interment in the cemetery on the hill. She was well along in years and is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Al Jordan, and by her grandchildren though her late daughter {Mrs. William Fox}.
Rumor has it that Luther Barlow and Miss Jae McKnown, daughter of the late {Col. N. A. McKown} are to be married. Mr. Barlow is purchasing agent in the west for the hay and grain firm of Paul, Billings & Co., and is located in Michigan. He is the son of townsman Charles M. Barlow.
Albert P. Northrop, son of Rufus P. Northrop, came home this evening from New York, and will stay a few days before going to his work on the Gould's engineering work in Missouri. A reception this evening at the home on Palen street for Rufus's father in law, Mr. Allen, being his 90th birthday.
